 This book is the first ever complete introduction to linguistics in Urdu. It includes chapters on core linguistic areas such as phonetics, morphology, syntax, and semantics and pragmatics as well as other descriptive and applied areas such as applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, discourse analysis and stylistics. More technical interdisciplinary subbranches of linguistics (such as forensic linguistics, clinical linguistics, eco-linguistics, semiotics) have also been included in this introduction to linguistics in Urdu. Keeping in mind the role of computers and the IT in describing, researching, and developing languages, we have also included chapters on corpus and computational linguistics. The book also includes chapters on the oft ignored areas of lexicology and lexicography, and etymology. To give student a complete introduction, a chapter has been included on Halliday’s systemic functional linguistics which is more popularly called as systemic functional grammar.

 اردو میں اگر کوئی شعبہ بری طرح نظرانداز ہوا ہے تو وہ لسانیات ہے۔ اس پر ہمہ وقتی تحقیق کا کوئی ایک ادارہ بھی موجود نہیں۔جامعات میں اس کی تدریس کا تھوڑا بہت اہتمام ضرور ہے۔ بایں وجہ اردو میں لسانیات پر گنی چنی کتب ہی ملتی ہیں اور ان میں سے اکثر کئی دہائیوں پہلے کی تحقیق اور تصورات کو پیش کرتی ہیں۔ ایسے میں محمد شیراز دستی و دیگر کی لسانیات کے بنیادی تصورات پر یہ کتاب خاص اہمیت کی حامل ہے۔ اس میں نہ صرف لسانیات کے اساسی مباحث، ان کی تازہ ترین توجیہات اور معاصر تحقیقات کو اختصار مگر جامعیت سے پیش کیا گیا ہے بلکہ اسے سہل اور رواں اسلوب میں لکھا گیا ہے۔ اس کتاب سے صرف لسانیات کے طلبہ ہی نہیں، اساتذہ اور عام قارئین بھی استفادہ کر سکتے ہیں۔
